Ingrown toenails happen when the nail curves downward into the skin and can create swelling and pain around the toe.
Ingrown toenails can be prevented by proper trimming of the toenails,
preferably straight across and not too short, and by avoiding shoes that
are too short or tight in the toe box.
Sometimes an ingrown will require a simple in-office procedure where a
small portion of the nail border is removed under local anesthetic to
alleviate pressure and pain.
